OVER ELS ZWEERINK
Els Zweerink (1971) is documentair- en portretfotograaf. Ze is in 2011 cum laude afgestudeerd aan de Fotoacademie Amsterdam met het project Finding Guillermo, een persoonlijk verhaal over de zoektocht naar haar Foster Parents Plan-broer uit El Salvador. Zweerink heeft regelmatig tentoonstellingen, publiceert in onder meer de Volkskrant en heeft diverse fotografieprijzen en nominaties op haar naam staan. 

OVER DE FOTO
Het portret is van de zoon van de fotograaf, Sammie (19). Sinds 2018 volgt zij hem en zijn vrienden van dichtbij. Zijn 18de verjaardag markeert de dag dat hij voor het eerst legaal een joint mag kopen. Hij is op dat moment in behandeling voor zijn blowgedrag. Als hij een week na zijn 18de verjaardag definitief van school wordt gestuurd vanwege spijbelen en blowen, is Zweerink bang hem kwijt te raken. Ze houdt de connectie met haar zoon vast door hem te fotograferen. Hier staat hij op het balkon om half 5 in de ochtend. Het is koud en hij geniet na van een mooie nacht uit.

ABOUT ELS ZWEERINK
Els Zweerink (1971) is a documentary and portrait photographer. She graduated cum laude from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam in 2011 with her project Finding Guillermo, a personal story about the search for her Foster Parents Plan brother from El Salvador. Zweerink exhibits regularly, publishes her work in a.o. De Volkskrant, and has various photography awards and nominations to her name. 

ABOUT THE PHOTO
This is the portrait of the photographer’s son Sammie (19). She has been following him and his friends closely since 2018. His 18th birthday marks the day he can legally buy cannabis for the first time. He is currently being treated for his cannabis use. When he is permanently expelled from school a week after his 18th birthday for skipping school and smoking cannabis, Zweerink is afraid of losing him. She maintains the connection with her son by photographing him. Here he is on the balcony at 4:30 a.m. It’s cold and he is enjoying the afterglow of a night out.
