OVER SHINJI OTANI

Shinji Otani was een keramist in Japan voordat hij besloot om fotograaf te worden. In 2007 voltooide hij zijn studie fotografie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.
Sinds 2015 werkt Shinji ook als OTANI NIEUWENHUIZE, een fotografen-duo met de Haagse fotograaf Johan Nieuwenhuize.

OVER HET PORTRET
Dit portret komt uit een serie over de Japanse gemeenschap in Nederland, waartoe ook Otani behoort.  Deze bestaat uit in totaal zo’n 8.600 mensen, net iets meer dan de Mexicaanse gemeenschap en iets minder dan de Israëlische. De meeste leden van de Japanse gemeenschap zijn ex-pats, daarnaast is een deel werkzaam in de creatieve industrie.

ABOUT SHINJI OTANI
Shinji Otani was a ceramist in Japan before he decided to become a photographer. In 2007 he finished his photography studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.
Since 2015, Shinji also works as OTANI NIEUWENHUIZE, a photographers’ duo with Johan Nieuwenhuize, who is based in The Hague.

ABOUT THE PORTRAIT
This is a portrait from a series about the Japanese community in the Netherlands, to which Otani belongs, too. It consists of about 8,600 people in total, slightly more than the Mexican community and slightly less than the Israeli community. Most members of the Japanese people in the Netherlands are ex-pats, and some of them work in the creative industry.
