This year, photographer Rob Hornstra and writer Arnold van Bruggen spent two months in Den Helder, where they made a portrait of the city. They photographed and spoke with hundreds of ‘Heldenaren’ – from fishermen to club presidents and from sea cadets to naval officers, in the city where everything revolves around the navy. Hornstra and Van Bruggen’s photos and stories are part of their long-term project The Europeans (2020-2030).

De entire exhibition The Naval Base is showcased from 27 to 31 October 2021 at Het Pompgemaal in Huisduinen, Den Helder. A selection of this exhibition can be seen at the Portrait Gallery Studio.
